Meet Your Care Team: Karlee Carlin, PA-C
In early May, we welcomed Karlee to our team as a study sub-investigator and clinic care provider. We’re grateful she’s here and are happy to share a bit about her with you! Hear from Karlee below:
“I grew up in the small town of Panora, Iowa, about 45 minutes west of Des Moines. I graduated from Simpson College with a degree in Exercise Science and dual minors in Psychology and Biology. I then went on to earn a Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies from Des Moines University.
My interest in healthcare began with my mother, who is a physical therapist and introduced me to the field at an early age. Growing up, I also had an exceptional physician assistant as my primary care provider, which sparked my interest in pursuing a career as a PA.”
What does life look like outside of work for her?
“Outside of work, my life revolves around my family. My husband is a math teacher and baseball coach, so during the summer, we spend a lot of time at the baseball field. We also have a one-year-old daughter and an energetic goldendoodle who keep us busy! Last summer was mostly spent inside soaking up newborn cuddles, so this summer, we are looking forward to spending more time outdoors with our daughter and making memories while boating, swimming, and taking trips to the zoo. My husband and I also love getting together with friends, whether that means visiting local breweries or hosting game nights and bonfires at our house.
One of my favorite activities is going for walks, especially around Gray’s Lake Park. I also enjoy practicing yoga and golfing (par-3 courses only!). In my free time, I enjoy getting lost in a good psychological thriller, cheering on Iowa sports teams, and listening to true crime and medical podcasts.”
What inspired her to specialize in diabetes care:
“My interest in diabetes care is both personal and professional. My grandmother passed away at a relatively young age from complications related to diabetes, and her experience has always stayed with me. Seeing the impact that diabetes can have on individuals and families inspired me to want to make a difference in this field.
As I worked in family medicine, I also became increasingly aware of how prevalent diabetes is and how challenging it can be to provide patients with the time, education, and support they need within a busy primary care setting. I often saw patients experience poor—and sometimes preventable—outcomes due to barriers in education, resources, or disease management. Those experiences motivated me to pursue diabetes care, where I could focus on helping patients better understand their condition and take an active role in their health.”
One Thing She Wants Everyone Living with Diabetes to Know:
“I wish every person living with diabetes knew that they do not have to navigate it alone. A diabetes diagnosis can feel overwhelming, but there are so many resources, tools, and healthcare professionals available to help along the way.
While diabetes is a serious condition, it does not have to define you or control your life. With education, support, and the right treatment plan, it is possible to live a full, healthy life. My goal is to help make diabetes feel less intimidating and empower patients to feel confident in managing their health.“
